Living Coast
UNESCO World Biosphere Region

Did you know that Sussex Bay contains a designated urban biosphere within twenty percent of our area? We’re really proud of this awesome regional status led by a wonderful team.

A designated urban biosphere reserve, The Living Coast stretches between Newhaven and Shoreham-by-Sea in Sussex. From the grassy South Downs down to the chalk-and-shingle coast and city streets, it embraces everyone and everything that lives within this area and makes life here possible.

UNESCO biospheres are areas with significant natural value, created to help us learn how to balance what people and nature need to flourish. If you live, work or visit this region, you are part of The Living Coast and can be a part of creating an environment that we can all enjoy now and in the future.

The project is Chaired by Martin Harris and led by and Advisory Group with a partnership network in place.
